Crafternoon: The Day Shortboarders & Longboarders Finally Call a Truce*
(*Kind of.)
For 35 years the Noosa Festival of Surfing has predominantly celebrated the full spectrum of longboarding and has become arguably the greatest celebration of surf culture. With a passion for innovation, organisers over the years have dabbled with shortboards making a mark on the Festival. For the purests, its a eye brow raise and slight grizzle, for the visionaries, the inclusion of shortboards has been well-received and given a chance for the longboarders to show their skills against the foam flickers. Since the dawn of time, one question has divided lineups for generations.
Who’s better??? shortboarders or longboarders?

So this year, in collaboration with Surfers for Climate and proudly supported by Mix FM, we’re solving the debate the only logical way possible:
By forcing them to compete together! (insert dracula laugh here)
Welcome to Crafternoon
Crafternoon is a brand-new division making its debut this year, and it might just be the most entertaining heat of the entire Festival.
The concept? Simple.
We pair one shortboarder with one longboarder, and as a team they post a combined score.
That’s right. No more eye-rolls in the carpark. No more passive-aggressive “nice wave” comments in the lineup. Now you’re teammates. You need each other. Your fate is literally tied to someone who probably owns a different fin setup to you.
It’s unity.
It’s collaboration.
It’s mildly uncomfortable.
And we can’t wait.
Crafternoon will take place on Saturday 21st March, the second Saturday of the Festival, running shortly after the High Performance Longboard and Twin Fin divisions. When the crowd’s warmed up and ready for chaos and blood! (too far?)
Don’t Have a Teammate? We’ll Assign You One.
Surfers are encouraged to create their own dream team ahead of time.
Got a longboarding mate you secretly respect? Perfect.
Got a shortboarding friend you constantly argue with? Even better.
No partner? No problem. We’ll pair you up on the day. Think of it as surfing’s version of married at first sight, but with more neoprene!
Rivals becoming teammates is half the fun.
The “Anything But a Surfboard” Challenge
As if that wasn’t enough, Mix FM is unleashing the “Anything But a Surfboard” Challenge.
This is your moment to paddle out on something that absolutely should not be surfed.
A door?
An ironing board?
A rogue plank of timber?
An old boogie board from 1978?
If it floats (even barely), it qualifies.
This is where dignity goes to die and legends are born.
