The Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club Got the 2017 Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing off to a flying start today in absolutely glorious conditions.

Always a strong supporter of the Noosa Festival, the Surf Club showcased an array of activities today, proudly celebrating the lifeguards of tomorrow, with the Nippers squad going all-out. Swimmers, paddleboarders and athletes, the young crew demonstrated their year’s-worth of learning under the expert tutelage of coach Tom Britton.

Rising star in the ironman world, Cooper Williams then took on four of his peers in a Pursuit Relay – Cooper taking on four disciplines with a relay team taking one exercise each. Testament to Cooper’s impressive skills, he still managed to come out on top, proving the versatility of his talents and the exceptional level of fitness he has developed under Noosa’s Surf Lifesaving Club.

Continuing the diverse waterman theme, and ahead of a weekend of bodysurfing with the Garage Handplanes Body Bash, a bodysurfing Legends Exhibition paddled out for some board-free surfing. Former Pipeline lifeguard and one of the world’s most talented and renowned bodysurfers, Mark Cunningham, headed the field, accompanied by waterwoman extraordinaire, Belinda Baggs, Californian filmmaker Tim Burnham, local half-dolphin, the incredibly aquatically talented Harrison Roach, Garage Handplanes ambassador and former world champ, Tom Marr and a handful of amazing watermen.

NFOS Friday-8

Without boards, using only their bodies, it was truly spectacular to see how these men and women utilise the energy of the ocean to gain incredible rides.

The evening entertainment also got off to a flying start, the XXXX Summer Beach Bar serving drinks at sundown and Burnham presenting his breathtaking movie, Dirty Old Wedge, an historic documentation of the renowned, notorious and lethal Newport Wedge, one of the most powerful and iconic bodysurfing waves on the planet.

With some chilled tunes and surfy vibes being provided by Gold Coast five-piece, Old Man Friday, it has been an exceptional, if unofficial start to the 26th annual Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing.

Competition starts bright and early tomorrow, with the Blue Planet 10-foot+ Longboard SUP Surfers first in the water at First Point at 6:30am.
