2016’s 25th Anniversary welcomed unprecedented numbers of competitors, with over 800 entries from more than 20 countries and regions across the 23 age and open divisions, including China, Vanuatu, Venezuela, Colombia and Peru, as well as six of the seven Australian states and territories. “We were thrilled to host 831 competitors this year,” says
“We were thrilled to host 831 competitors this year,” says festival director, Sam Smith. “We were nearly at capacity – but we’ll always find room for a few more! We are anticipating a similar response in 2017 and entries have already started flooding in.”
The Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing is the most diverse surfing festival in the world, with age divisions from under 15 to over 70, and 11 specialty events, including nose-riding, bodysurfing and finless. Competitors from just nine years old all the way to their mid 80s vie for their place on the podium across the ‘8 Days of Pure Stoke’ at Noosa’s First Point.
Continually striving to attract a wider range of surfers, the festival this year presented the inaugural junior girls’ Under 15 division – kindly supported by Sunshine Coast Airport – after previous years’ Under 18 events had seen some youngsters having to go up against girls twice their age and size. The new category parallels the junior boys’ divisions, providing a superb showcase for the surfing stars of tomorrow.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Magoo Memorial Men’s 70 & Over is an opportunity for the old salty dogs to show that they’re still in the game, and that true surfers never retire. The Laguna Real Estate Festival of Surfing strives to be as inclusive as possible, from grommets to grandpas.
“Every division fills up fast,” says Sam Smith of the on-line entry process, “many within the first month of opening. So we are urging competitors from all over the world to get their entries in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.”
Entries are now officially open now the Competitors section of the site for all age categories and the Old Mal division, with specialty and pro divisions opening a little later this year.
